May 2016 Favourites!

I feel like I say this every year and it’s probably starting to sound like a broken record but I still CAN’T BELIEVE that May is already over. This year has been such a blur.

Anyway, on to the favourites!

May favourites

First up, we have my absolute all-time favourite face wipes. I have tried so many brands of face wipes it’s not funny and honestly have never come close to finding anything I like nearly as much.

Crop facial wipes

These are the Crop Natural Skincare double-sided facial wipes. I have never found something that takes the grime off my face quite as well. I have super frustrating skin, it’s combination to the extreme. I will manage to have fairly dry skin while also having an extremely oily t-zone so my nose area gets a bit clogged up if I don’t pay special attention to keeping my face well cleaned. The texture on these wipes is amazing. One side is for exfoliating, and it almost feels like I’ve used an exfoliating scrub when I’m done with it – just not quite as harsh. The other side is the complete opposite – super soft! I’m yet to find a wipe that feels as soft (though the Burt’s Bees ones probably come close – but that’s all I liked about those wipes). For some reason this brand is only being sold at Coles so if you want some, you’ll have to grab some next time you’re buying groceries 😉

revlon and maybelline

Next up, we have my go-to foundation. The Revlon ColorStay Foundation in Ivory for Combination/Oily skin is my FAVOURITE foundation. I’ve tried a few liquid foundations but always been super hesitant to change too often because of the price of some liquid foundations, but after hearing so many good reviews on this one I had to give it a go and I’m so glad that I did. It stays in place all day, even with my terribly oily skin. It has great, build-able coverage and doesn’t leave me feeling super cake-y. Plus, they actually have a shade that suits my skin tone! I have found it really difficult to find foundations to match my skin tone, and one of the (many) reasons I love this line of foundation is the awesome range of colours.

Hand in hand with that, I use the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer. I’m sure if you watch beauty videos on YouTube or read blogs relating to beauty you will have heard of this concealer because it’s a favourite for sure and I can see why. I struggled for ages because I loved the concealer but I had the wrong shade and was for some silly reason under the impression that because it’s ‘technically’ the lightest shade that there wouldn’t be another that would suite me – boy was I wrong! I love this concealer, it doesn’t crease under my eyes, provides really good coverage and is super affordable.

hand cream

Speaking of hands! My favourite hand cream of the moment is by Thank You. I didn’t know they’d brought out hand cream until I walked past them at the shops the other day. If you don’t know much about the brand, head over here to find out more about what they do and how they do it. It’s always nice to know that what you’re purchasing is going to go on to help other people. The cream itself is great, it smells great and soaks in really quickly which is primarily what I like in a hand cream.

Honourable mention to the new Cotton On hand creams. The Pomegranate one in the photo smells so good. A little goes a long way, I’ve so far gotten 6 uses out of one of the sachets! The cream also soaks in really well.

Speaking of things that smell good (my goodness I’m on a roll with that line…) this deodorant smells SO GOOD. I’ll be honest, I have to reapply once or twice if I really want to continue to free of stink, but I am just so over aerosol deodorant it’s not funny. They all smell the same, they all make me not want to breathe the stuff in because chemicals and just… I’m not into it. So I’m trying some natural deodorants. If you have any suggestions please let me know!!

shaver heads

These Schick Intuition Pure Nourishment shave heads are so good. I’ve always hated shaving because I have dry skin and would always feel like I was aggravating my skin whenever I shaved – these solve that problem! They make the shaver glide over my skin and afterwards my skin feels so soft, not dry at all!

I’d have to say this is my favourite Scentsy Bar of the month. I’ve been craving cookies something fierce (probably because of the sugar) but I’ve been trying really hard to avoid things that are super super high in carbs when they’re not totally necessary. It’s not something I’ll always be doing, it’s more to wean myself off a little, but either way, it’s been so nice to have my room smell like cookies!

scent circles

These Scent Circles are so so good to have in my car. They make the whole car smell so good and they last a good amount of time! The ones I’ve got in the picture here are quite old ones, they’ve come out with some cute new designs recently, but the product is still the same and still amazing. I love changing them up whenever the scent starts to fade.

There you have it folks, my favourites for the month! As I’m writing this I feel like there’s probably a few things I’ve forgotten but that’s ok – they’ll probably feature in next month’s post!

What have you been loving recently? Let me know below!

Where Have I Been? || Life Update

(I would just like to state first off that this is the third time I’ve had to type these first two paragraphs out because apparently my internet can’t handle it when I upload to youtube so I’m beginning to feel a little crazy for repeating myself so much – bear with me!)

I seriously considered not making this blog/video and just diving in with content but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Too much has changed in the past 7 months and I feel like a completely different person. My life has changed so drastically as well that it just didn’t make sense to continue as if nothing had happened. So here we are.

The past 7 months have been the absolute worst months I have ever experienced in my entire life. I have felt pain I didn’t think it was possible to feel. I have managed to walk through things I didn’t think I could survive and thankfully, I’m here to tell the tale. Or not tell the tale… Either way.

The flip side is that while this year so far has been impossibly difficult, it has also been a time for immense personal growth. I’ve always considered myself a very independent, resilient person who could handle a lot, but that has been tested and I have been pushed to my limits this year. Which is not altogether a bad thing. I am handling more than I ever thought I could. I am ‘alone’ but my friendships are stronger than they have been in years. I am ‘alone’ but more able to rely on myself solely than I ever have and honestly, I think that’s such an awesome thing. I am learning how to be me again, something I hadn’t realised I needed to relearn.

I’ve realised, looking back on things, that I was kind of in denial for a long time that things were ok, that I was ok, and that everything was going to be fine. In reality, I was giving up parts of myself as each day went by. I was becoming more unhealthy mentally, physically and spiritually. I was shrinking myself down, trying to make myself more ‘loveable’ when that wasn’t what the situation really required. What the situation required was me standing up and saying enough was enough.

I’d never been through a breakup before last November, let alone breaking up an almost-marriage. To those women who have left a hard situation because they knew that as much as they loved the person, it was slowly killing you both… I have the utmost respect for you. Leaving someone you still love deeply is unimaginably painful. Leaving because there are situations outside of your control that just aren’t changing is the hardest thing I have ever done, but I am so damn proud of myself for doing it. I faltered and I considered running straight back so so many times but ultimately I know that where I am now is so much better for me. I am stronger. I know myself more and more importantly I am BEING myself.

So what now? Now I dream! Now I strive! I can do anything if I put my mind to it. I have an infinite number of possibilities ahead of me! I have a new home, with a housemate who I’d only met once before moving in – and he’s not crazy! I am so thankful for that, you have no idea. I have a job which I am equally thankful for, even if the shifts are hard to handle (I do not enjoy working at night). I have enough money to feed myself and pay my bills. I have a room that looks vaguely the way I want it to. I have friends who have been more supportive that I ever would have thought and again, I am so thankful for them. Friends seriously make me richer than any job ever could.

So come with me on this journey! I’m learning to be me again and I’m learning how to love life again and it’s not easy but it’s so damn worth it.

Mid Year Goals

2015-06-23 19.37.27

I’ll admit it, this year hasn’t quite gone how I intended it to go. I had all these grand plans that just haven’t come to be. In some ways I feel like it’s a lesson to not hold onto my plans too tightly, because when I do it can be quite a let down when things don’t work out. However that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop dreaming or stop trying 😉 I’m nothing if not determined!

I think it’s really important to have goals in life, and to revisit with some mid year goals, it helps to have an end product or result in mind when the going gets tough! They don’t have to be large, dramatic goals either! Something as simple as ‘cut out one teaspoon of sugar from my daily coffee’ works well!

I feel like my mid year goals aren’t too unrealistic or huge. I made a video just having a little chat about my aims, but I’ll pop a quick list below!

1. I would really like to get on top of my time management. I feel like I waste a lot of time that I could be spending doing more worthwhile things, you know? Some of those things would be the usual, like keeping our house cleaner and more organised (another thing I want to work on), however some of them are things like ‘do more craft’ because I actually LOVE craft. I love making things, especially as gifts, but I feel like I spend too much time watching TV or getting distracted by other things when I could be doing fun things that would probably be better for my mental health 😛

2. My health needs some serious attention paid to it. I’ve put on a little bit of weight in the past 6-12 months and the only real reason for that is unhealthy habits. I’m unfit as all heck, and my body is clearly not super happy with me. Those that know me personally know that we’d love to have a baby in the next couple of years, and I want to be as healthy as I possibly can be for that child. I’ve got a few things that can (no definites!) be passed on genetically, so anything I can prevent I’d really like to, you know? Plus, I don’t function well when my Chronic Fatigue is doing badly, which it is right now. It’s not something that can be cured, but it can be managed at least a little better than how I’m managing it now. Plus, losing a little weight before the wedding doesn’t seem too bad to me 😛

3. I want to work on my blog/youtube channel more. I love writing and getting my thoughts out there and making videos and connecting with you guys!! I’ve put it off for too long, to be honest. There’s a lot of things I’ve put off for various reasons that I seriously wish I hadn’t, so my goal for the next YEAR is to let myself dream, and actually stand up and say ‘yes, I can do it!’ and go after those dreams! Who’s with me!?

I think my over-arching goal in all of this though, is to be kind to myself! I’m not going to get anywhere if I’m not looking after myself. I always come back to the analogy of a mother putting an oxygen mask on herself before her child if a plane is going down.

Check out the video below if you’d like to hear me ramble a little more about these goals, with a special cameo by Chilz the cat, who couldn’t help but steal the spotlight 😛

So, what do you think? What are your goals for the rest of the year? I’d love to hear about them! post signature green

Kikki K Large Gold Planner Review

kikki k large gold planner

I have to admit I hesitated when I first saw the Large Kikki K Life Planner. It’s gorgeous but I’ve got a teeny tiny budget and they’re not cheap 😉 However, I was super fortunate to walk in on a sale one day without meaning to, and nabbed the last one they had in store – the display model! I managed to get another small discount because of that.

So, seeing as I love it so much I thought I’d share it with you. This planner just makes me so happy. I wasn’t sure how I’d like the gold colour but it’s definitely grown on me and now it’s love. I originally had a Lilac Medium Planner as my first Kikki K planner, which I still love, but I was finding it wasn’t big enough. I like to have a lot of paper space, it’s just something my brain appreciates when I’m planning my week or writing notes or lists. For some reason, it makes me feel more free and inspired, with more room to think – if that makes sense.

I bought the Time Planner refills for this so I have an abundance of paper! I took a good chunk of the plain lined paper out because I wasn’t going to use it right away and it wasn’t all fitting. It’s come in handy though because if I decide I want to create another tab, I have paper to fill it!

The stickers in it are so helpful, I love the tab stickers so you can really personalise it and make it your own.

Check out the video below for a more in-depth look at what I have inside currently and how I’m using it. I’ve also got the Kikki K Dashboard Kit in my planner, so if you’d like a post or video on that let me know in the comments below!

Goodness Me Box June 2015

Goodness Me Box June 2015

I’m always trying to make my life even a little bit healthier whenever possible. It’s a super slow process for me (seriously slow) but combine this desire with a love for subscription boxes and here you have me reviewing the Goodness Me Box!

I was at a friend’s house when she received her Goodness Me Box and I’d been putting it off for a while but as soon as I saw hers I couldn’t resist anymore. Especially because one of the first things she did was make cookies with the almond meal. Delicious cookies. I cannot even begin to describe these cookies, they were the best homemade cookies I’d had in a while! And they didn’t taste ‘different’ like I’d expected.

Anyway, enough about cookies!! Onto the box.

June Collage 2I’ve recently been introduced to the amazing world that is natural peanut butter so I was really excited to receive a whole jar! I’ve been using it to make healthy but tasty snacks!

I tend to not be a huge fan of ‘healthy’ bars, I have to confess. I’ve tried a bunch of them and even have some sitting in my pantry, but I don’t love them. I’m really hoping this will be different, but I’m honestly not holding my breath. I’m almost considering just giving it to Anthony without even bothering to try it.

The rice bran oil is the cutest little oil bottle I’ve ever seen! I’ve never tried rice bran oil so I’m keen to try it! I don’t imagine it’ll last long here.

I’m not a huge user of smoothie powders so I’m actually kind of glad that it’s a small sized sample. I originally thought it was meant to be a full size as the sticker on the pouch says it’s 200g which is listed on the card as full size, however I think they just took stickers off the usual packaging and put it on the pouches. I kind of find that annoying but what can you do?

June Collage 1

Goji berries are another thing my friend (Nat! You may ‘meet’ Nat in future food related posts if I can convince her…) tried right out of the box. We’d both heard people shout the praises of these little berries and were expecting them to be good…. she was not a fan. I showed Anthony the box and he also shouted the praises of these berries (so they must be really really good) and said they’re just a bit bland and bitter so…. they’ll be interesting to try!

I don’t really feel like there’s much more to say on the almond meal. I mentioned it being made into cookies above…. COOKIES!! Enough said.

The face mask was a bonus for signing up this month, and it mentioned ‘cacao’ so I’m super keen. I need to get something to ‘activate’ it though as per the instructions – I need to grab some more coconut oil.

Last but not least, the lasagne sheets. I’m super wary about these to be honest. There’s no gluten, dairy, soy, sugar…. ANYTHING. They’re made from vegetables according to the packet. They could be amazing, they could be totally disgusting… stay tuned because I will most likely post the results on my instagram! (Link in the sidebar).

So there you have the healthy goodness for this month. What did you guys think? Have you received this box before? If you’d like to see me unboxing this month’s Goodness Me box, and see my first reactions, check out the video below!

Also, I’m on the hunt for a couple new subscription boxes to try so let me know if you guys have a favourite that ISN’T bellabox, lust have it or violet box. I want something new!

Meal Plan Mondays – 15/6/15 – Sometimes life doesn’t obey our plans!

Meal Plan Mondays 15615

You know when you plan your life out ‘perfectly’ and it just doesn’t happen? Here’s me reminding you that sometimes life has it’s own plans. You’re probably going to see a few things repeated this week from last week because… they didn’t happen! We had a few things planned like work etc that changed days and meant meals had to change (for example when to have a slow cooker meal).

And here’s another honest moment. I considered subbing in different meals this week so nothing was repeated. I thought ‘oh they’re going to judge me and get all confused because I’m repeating meals and…. WAIT A SECOND!’

I don’t want this blog to be another person posting their perfectly decorated, untouchable lifestyle that no one can relate to. Now I have absolutely nothing against those blogs – on the contrary!! I love them, they’re my guilty pleasure and a part of me obviously would love their ‘perfect’ homes (no one is perfect!). However the realist in me realises that comparing is just going to lead to me being grumpy and sad. So here I am to be honest with you guys.

Here’s what we’re (hoping) to eat this week:

Monday: Minced Beef Wellingtons

Wednesday: Lamb Roast!

Thursday: Homemade Sausage Rolls and Homemade chips

Friday: Pepperoni Italian Pasta (My one-pot wonder!)

Saturday: Soup & homemade bread

Sunday: Chicken & Rice Stir Fry

10 Life Lessons from Gilmore Girls

10 Life Lessons fro Gilmore Girls
I’ve been watching Gilmore Girls since before I could understand what was even happening on the show. I’ve grown up surrounded by it, and even though it’s quite an ‘old’ show now, I’m still constantly discovering new people who love it. I wanted to be the Gilmore Girls and I wanted my life to be right out of an episode of Gilmore Girls!
Through all the years of watching, and probably due to the nature of the show, I’ve grown quite attached to the characters of Stars Hollow, and I like to think they’ve taught me a few things about life.

1. Boys do like smart girls.
Dean and Jess both clearly loved Rory partially because of her wit and intelligence. I personally think even Logan admired her because she wasn’t like the other girls he’d previously dated. I particularly admired Jess because when Rory went down a path that wasn’t her, and was in reality a manifestation of her running away from scary things, he called her out on it, because he saw the potential in her. I think it’s the same for both Gilmore Girls – Lorelai was loved for her spunk and intelligence too!

2. Don’t let money stop you from dreaming.
I know not everyone has rich parents/grandparents like the Lorelai’s, however even without their help they still kept dreaming. Lorelai dreamt of opening her own inn long before she had any hope of receiving money help. The Lorelai’s started down the track of sending Rory to Chilton before they knew they were going to get any financial help! Besides, dreaming keeps us inspired and inspiration makes life more fun.

3. Working hard and being sincere gets you places.
Lorelai started from the very bottom when she moved out of her parent’s house. She started as a maid living in a back shed, and ended up owning her own inn and living in a beautiful house! Purely because of determination and hard work. If that’s not a shout out for determination I don’t know what is!

4. A man will not  complete you and you do not need one.
Sure, guys are awesome! Having one is great! It’s not the be all and end all though. You can be successful and accomplished without one. You can have a whole and fulfilling life without one. That’s not to say Lorelai never wanted a partner, just that she didn’t put her life on hold looking for one. On the same topic, though, it’s important to not hold yourself back behind walls too much, otherwise you might end up being a crazy cat lady…

5. Too much academic pressure can be destructive – go easy on yourself.
Rory was not a stranger to a meltdown every now and then in regards to her academic life, both during high school and college. It’s a clear warning to all – aiming high is not a bad thing, however you need to take care of yourself, and sacrificing yourself and your sanity for the sake of good grades is frankly, not worth it in my opinion. (Though I’m sure we could all learn a lesson on dedication from Rory!)

6. Talk to your kids (and all children) like they’re real people.
Children are not stupid, they’re simply still learning. Speaking to them as though they have no intelligence will cause them to act accordingly. Treating them as though they are intelligent human beings with abilities will help them to act as such. If speak to someone like an unintelligent child without opinions, that is what they will be.

7. It really does take a village to raise a child.
Stars hollow raised Rory. Every birthday party is a testimony to this. The farewell scene before Rory heads off to cover the Presidential campaign shows just how much every person in that town cared for and was invested in Rory. I believe this kind of childhood is one of the most rewarding. There is no right way to raise a child, but I believe that Lorelai got it pretty right in this aspect.

8. Parents make mistakes.
Hellooooooo Emily and Richard. They loved Lorelai just like any other parent does, and sometimes love makes you do stupid things because you care and don’t know how to handle a situation. While most of us may at one point or another have our differences with our parents, I think it’s well worth remembering that they act out of love… even if they royally screw it up.

9. Sometimes the meanest person you know is the one with the most going on underneath.
Paris taught me this. Now this isn’t an excuse to be nasty, at all. I’m not saying being mean is ok, but sometimes there’s a cause and it’s helpful to remember that everyone is on a journey.

10. Don’t accept bad behaviour from men.
Rory may seem meek and mild, but that girl could stand up for herself, and that’s exactly what she did! When she thought her boyfriend was being an ass, she definitely told him about it, and I think that contributed a lot to the person Jess became in later life.

This list is just the tip of the iceberg of life lessons from the Gilmores, but they’re the first that popped into mind.
What’s your favourite lesson from the Gilmore Girls?

Healthy Snacks – Apple Cookies

Healthy snacks

Cookies are my weakness. I will walk past the cookies in Coles chanting to myself ‘you do not need the cookies, you do not need the cookies!’ because otherwise there would be cookies in my house constantly.

Obviously, cookie cravings don’t help you much when you’re trying to eat healthy snacks and put nutritious foods into your body, so I was going through Pinterest the other day looking for yummy snacks that still had a sweet element, but were healthy and OH HEY THERE APPLE COOKIES!

I came across a few posts on healthy snacks that suggested this, and I had bought some natural peanut butter the other week to eat with apples anyway, so this made total sense.

The process is simple!

1. Core your apple and slice it into rounds

2. Spread some natural peanut butter over your ‘cookies’

3. Add some goodies!

I added some quick oats, dark chocolate chips and some shaved coconut, but you could experiment with whatever sounds good to you!

These were actually a lot nicer than I expected. The peanut butter helped to give it a softer texture which helped towards the cookie illusion. I am usually quite hesitant to believe in healthy snacks because they never seem to taste quite as good as they sound, but this did! I will actually make this again!

Have you discovered a super awesome healthy snack that actually tastes good? Please share with me below!

Meal Plan Monday! 8/6/15

Meal Plan Mondays 8615

If you know me at all, you’ll know I like meal planning. I hate the feeling of not knowing what to cook for dinner, it stresses me out! Plus as I’ve said in the past, meal planning helps with grocery shopping as well.
I like to shop for two weeks at a time when possible, just because it makes life easier for me. I may grab a few things during the fortnight like milk or some fresh veggies but for the most part purchases like that don’t come up too often.
I’ll post my Grocery Haul video below for you guys! I spent roughly $185 on food for two weeks, which ends up being just over $90 a week for groceries and snacks for 4-5 servings.

I tend to meal plan around Monday/Tuesday and go grocery shopping on Wednesday, just due to how our lives work at the moment. However, I’ll be posting these in a normal week format for you guys! Click the links to see recipes I’m going to use.

Here’s what I’m planning on cooking this week.

Monday: Stuffed Peppers
Tuesday: Takeaway night
Wednesday: Skinny Slow Cooker Chicken Tortilla Soup
Thursday: Beef Koftas w/ Tzatsiki Dip and veggies.
Friday: Homemade Pizzas (I’m going to attempt my own bases for the first time!)
Saturday: Quinoa Crumbed Chicken & Sweet Potato Chips
Sunday: Minced Beef Wellingtons

Here’s the video I posted a few days ago showing my very first Grocery Haul, and some of the ingredients for these recipes!

Using up your extra lemons

Using up your excess lemons

One of the fabulous things about our new house is the lemon tree in the backyard! However, it’s clearly been tended to really well because it’s absolutely flourishing! We’ve got more lemons than we know what to do with, so I decided to do a little research into lemon usage! Here’s my top ten uses for any spare lemons you’ve got lying around! Let me know in the comments below if you’ve got a favourite use of lemons. They’re so handy!

1. Clean your microwave!
Grab a lemon and a bowl of water. Cut the lemon in half, or into a few wedges and put the whole cut up lemon into the bowl of water. Put the bowl of water into your microwave and turn it on for 3-5 minutes. Your microwave will smell much fresher, and the water combined with the lemon will enable you to simply wipe off any cooked-on food.

2. Freshen up your chopping boards
Chopping boards, especially wooden ones, can begin to stain or smell – and who can blame them!? We chop onions and garlic and meat and all kinds of things on them and some of that is hard to really wash off, especially once the odor has sunk in. Grab a lemon, cut it in half and rub the cut side of the lemon all over the chopping board and then rinse with water.

3. Cold remedy
It’s an oldie but a goodie! Put a few slices of lemon into a cup of boiling water with a little bit of honey and you’ve got yourself a great sore-throat reliever. Particularly relieving if you’ve got a cough as well.

4. Natural blonde highlights
Mix 1/4 cup of lemon juice with 3/4 cup water and spray over your hair. Sit in the sun until it dries, and you’ll have blonde highlights without the chemicals! To improve results and extend their staying power, repeat for a week.

5. Nail strengthener
Combine olive oil (or your favourite cooking oil) with some lemon juice and soak your nails in it to give them a refresh if you’ve been forgetting to be kind to your nails! As an added bonus, it’ll help fix yellowing nails.

6. Banish fridge smells
Tell your smells where to go with lemon juice! Soak a cotton ball in lemon juice or put some of the juice on a sponge and leave in the fridge overnight to give your fridge a new lease on life. Don’t forget to throw out any old food that’s causing the stink!

7. Fix soggy lettuce
Has your lettuce gone soggy? Never fear! Pop it in a bowl of cold water with the juice of half a lemon, and leave it in the fridge for an hour. Make sure you rinse and dry the leaves well.

8. Remove under-arm stains
You know those annoying armpit stains that you can get on your clothes? Especially on black clothes? Mix equal parts lemon juice and water and scrub on the stains. Never again will you need to get the stains dry-cleaned out!

9. Whiten your whites!
Put some diluted or straight lemon juice in with your washing to whiten your whites and leave them smelling lemony-fresh!

10. Boost your metabolism
Putting a few slices of lemon in your water bottle will help to speed up your metabolism! Plus, it’s super refreshing!

What’s your best way for using up extra lemons?
